Supplements Won’t Work in the Bottle

Over time I’ve honed a line up of immune-boosting all-stars that have made a significant difference in my well being. I call them my “cowgirl supplements” because that’s how they make me feel -  game for adventure, confident in my wellness and ready to roll.

Foolproof? No, but they usually work for me. I’ve been able to repeatedly curtail incoming ickiness thanks to my vitamin lineup - as long as I actually take them.

Because we can buy expensive supplements, get a gym membership, order a new journal, download a meditation program, etc. But if we don’t actually use these tools, there’s no upside. We have to participate to get the benefits.

Your vitamins aren’t going to help you feel better when they’re sitting on the kitchen counter. Not even a placebo effect. That’s right: supplements don’t work in the bottle.

This phrase has become a touchstone for me. Often we know what’s good for us but it can be hard to make a new choice - particularly as we get older. Why? We become set in our ways, those neural grooves are more firmly entrenched. The word that comes to mind is cantankerous, an adjective I never want applied in my direction.

Regardless of my age, I want to stay neurally supple, curious and working towards mastery. Knowing a thing or two isn’t a place to stop, it isn’t a destination. On the contrary, it becomes a great base from which to build, to keep learning. Switch it up, buttercup

So here’s the line-up, folks. With Covid making the rounds in L.A., I thought it was a timely moment to share the goods. I’m no doctor but I tapped some of my smarty-pants medical dream team to assemble this protocol.

Whether or not you actually dip into the below, please consider where in your life the metaphorical jars of vitamins are stacked up, getting dusty instead of being put to good use. What new ways of being, thinking, experiencing life are waiting for you? What new levels of vitality and awareness are around the corner? Twist the cap, drink it down, see where the adventure takes you.

Feeling a bug coming on? Exposed to COVID? Meet my cowgirl supplements:

  • AHCC - This mushroom compound is my hero supplement. I used to get sick whenever I stepped on a plane. If you looked at me wrong, I’d get a cold. Thanks to this stuff, I feel like I’m wearing an antibacterial cloak. If you’ve been exposed to Covid, megadose with 6 pills. On subsequent days, follow the instructions on the bottle.

  • Colostrum - Thanks to toxic mold poisoning I developed ulcerative colitis a few years back. I’ve been on medications pretty much since my diagnosis, but thanks to this powder from ARMRA, I am now completely symptom free and off all meds. Beyond which, Colostrum helps boost your baseline immunity through gut health so I take it daily. I like the blood orange. Just be sure you don’t mix this with hot beverages because it’ll kill off the good stuff.

  • Vitamin D - I already sang big D’s praises for hormonal regulation in my prior Substack. It’s also great for your baseline immunity. Bonus! Take one per day when you’ve eaten something containing fat (olive oil, avocado, etc.). Otherwise the D won’t get absorbed into your bloodstream and you’re just making expensive pee.

  • Liposomal C - More bioavailable than pills and less likely to disrupt your digestion. Squeeze a packet into a small glass of water and toss it back like a shot of morning tequila. Try to do 2x a day for the next couple days until you’re over the hump.

  • Zinc - Take 1-2 a day for the next couple days. Be sure to have a little food in your stomach otherwise it’s an invitation for nausea.

  • Quercetin Phytosome - Found to curtail / prevent intensity of COVID. Great for respiratory health and overall immune response. Follow instructions on the bottle. 1-3 capsules a day.

  • NAC - For lung health, specifically. Also found to be an ally against COVID. Pop three a day until you’re in the clear.

If you found this helpful or amusing, would greatly appreciate your feedback. Give it a “ like” below or drop a comment. I love hearing from you. And if there’s a demi-elder subject you’d like me to address, please let me know. This is intended to be an ongoing dialogue, not a one-way street. Thank you for reading!
